Food and Travel: Sydney High Tea

How I miss high tea, especially the recent one I had in Hong Kong's Intercontinental Hotel. Foie gras for free! High teas make such perfect brunch dates for girls. They can be pricey, so I will recommend purchasing coupons off sites like groupon and scoopon for avid high tea goers. Here are some of the high tea spots I been in Sydney.

1. The Tea Cosy

Teaspoons

Teapot Cosies

This place mostly specialises in scones and known for its old-school crochet or knitted teapot holders - the tea cosy. Yes, they are sold there, likewise for homewares and gifts. High tea is served there at an affordable $35 per person, unlike the exorbitant The Tea Room at QVB that is double the price. I was going to do a write-up about it but I guess overpriced sums it up. The food is good, but not spectacular enough to be worth the price.

Creme Brulee

Tea and Scones

We went for the Devonshire Tea set, as served in scone baskets with your choice of tea. Clearly freshly baked along with a unique array of jams and all-natural double thick cream. We had fig and ginger, and pear and vanilla jams, which the latter is my personal favourite. The tea cosy does have the prettiest tableware and best scones, hot and fluffy with a lil' crunch!

2. Westin Sydney

Madhatter's Afternoon Tea

What looks good does not taste good. Being 'invited' for afternoon tea with the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland would be every girl's childhood dream to be living in the fairytale. This tea set is The Mad Tea Party at $49. Apparently the top tier left our mood "tumbling down the rabbithole". Appearance-wise, it suits the theme with the white rabbit pocket watch, the mad hatter's hat and queen of hearts. They are a blueberry macaron, chocolate mud cake and layers of chocolate ganache, raspberry buttercream and jelly respectively, Not only were they too sweet for our liking, the macaron was especially awful. The scones were decent and I enjoyed the 'Tweedledee & Tweedledum' and 'Alice in Wonderland' on the lower tier. Roasted beef and fresh asparagus roulade on mini laugen, and alaskan crabmeat salad on double bread wrapped in cucumber. Named the 'Caterpillar' was cherry bocconcini and tomato on fresh green salad boat, nothing special or delightful at all. Still, its worth trying this high tea once.

3. Level 14

Afternoon Tea at Level 14

High tea at Level 14 was awesome, the taste, the price, the view. I have never seen this side of Sydney until I came up here for brunch. There was a promotion on Scoopon, so the price came to $20 per person. The top tier was simple but exquisite, as I would prefer as opposed to horrendously sweet assortments. On the whole, it is your average high tea, probably better options otherwise for the discount. Yet, I have always wanted to return again for high tea, but end up going to some place new to try.

4. Boronia Tea Room

Afternoon Tea at Boronia Tearoom

Visited the Boronia Tearoom eons ago, as seen from me wearing frames. In that 'era', I would not go anywhere without them until the fateful day my friend lost them in a club. Your average tarts, sandwiches, um hardened marshmallows and green jelly? Was this because it was a groupon purchase? Again, your average afternoon tea, but what matters is I had great company. We had a photography session around the old heritage mansion which possessed beautiful architecture hailing from 1885.
